How To Semi DIY Your Necklace

Untitled

Got this ‘collar’ necklace a couple of weeks ago but you don’t see the collar shape.  So I changed it.

STEP 1.  Flip it over to see the links that join each square stone together.

Untitled

STEP 2.  Taking sharp scissors and starting from the bottom center of the necklace, slowly snip a link at a time. Rhinestones will fall. You are cutting them out to create that ‘V’ opening.

Untitled

STEP 3.  Keep slowly snipping links.   You can see the gap to create  a V shape.

Untitled

STEP 4.  Flip the necklace front side to check for uniformity and a defined v-shape.  This is where I stopped.

Untitled

STEP 5.  Check the overall effect.

Untitled

STEP 6. I made about 5 snips of the links to make a more defined collar. It’s imperfect but I like stuff that way.

STEP 7.  Layer over anything.  I wore mine today over a vintage T-shirt but dresses or plain T-shirts will work

Yea I know.  Collars are everywhere and we’re probably getting sick of them.  Got to say though.  I’ve been looking for months for a vintage necklace collar.  Not sure that qualifies as the difference but regardless. The search continues.  Until I find it I ordered this one from Forever21.

Didn’t really love: it’s too rounded.  But it didn’t cost a rent cheque so I got the scissors and cut in a more defined V shape for a collar.  (Thx Tess for the brilliant inspiration).

TIP:  I can see these steps being done to all sorts of inexpensive rhinestone necklaces. You don’t like the shape? DO NOT THROW IT.  Grab your scissors and cut it into one you do like.  I think the more irregular the shape, the more interesting a piece you’ll create anyway that’s unique to you.

Another tip: you can dye your necklace with nail polishing !

That looks much better. Collars are being done to death at the moment, but this one’s a bit different, I think because it looks like actual jewelry rather than just a collar? It’s really cute anyway! x

    Love this!
OK, I have what is surely a stupid question: how is it that the whole thing doesn’t fall apart once you start cutting? Is there a particular way you have to cut it in order to keep from destroying it? Thanks!

    • Karen says:

Look at the back side of it in picture # 2. You see those squares? Those are each a rhinestone. You want to cut in BETWEEN those squares where you see a thin link. I cut that link that holds each rhinestone together.

Start at the bottom center of the necklace. You will see a few rhinestones fall but it won’t be much. Maybe 4?
