citrus

Dress: Zara (similar style here or I'd KILL for this by Wang). Gladiator sandals: Sigerson Morrision (plainer versions here or these cuff ones in diff colours).  Bag: Cambridge Satchel (worn before here). Nails: Essie 'Bright Tights' (looks 10x brighter in real life and I love it!).  Shades: Ray Ban

This is what I wore when it was 100 degrees in New York.  Yes - 100 degrees. I mean -  I looked at my wardrobe that morning and thought 'Karen wtf do you wear when it's 100 outside???'

I went with this grecian style dress from Zara bought a good two years ago-ish. It's white, cotton and light - anything heavier and I would've melted.  Even the bag couldn't be dark.

Still sweated my a** off.  Bloody global warming.

my week - 7.30.11

Back up to Woodstock.  Soft leather sent via Lotuff & Clegg.  The dress I didn't buy at Woodstock.  Pick ups from the city.  Vintage shop in the West Village.  Bumping into celeb stylist June Ambrose (so random).  Another venetian mirror. Japanese mag asks for a street pic.  DIY cut snake skin boots.

Where did u get that - denim shirt

Oversized shirts work wonders.  Especially in making a body con dress instantly more casual and you feel less like 'I'm wearing a tight dress and I hope no one's staring at my ass.'  Apart from being the stylishly 'oh I just threw this old thing on' perfect layer piece, big shirts are also the security blanket for grown ups.

I stopped Marybeth to ask her about hers which is from American Apparel.  She's reminded me about flinging one of my loose shirts over a short dress.

Marybeth - did you finally end up getting the black versions of the boots we have?

Similars to her look:

Sam Edelman boots or these if you prefer plainer versions
LeSportsac bag
Obey Mason, GAP or Hydrogen denim shirt
T by Alexander Wang dress

ps.  Are you liking these posts where I stop random people in the street? Keep going? Less?  More? Let me know in the comments below, tweet or leave a facebook message....

old school

Swing dress: H&M.  Bag: Vintage Coach (got mine on eBay but they re-launched all of them again - about bloody time).  Patent leather shoes: Topshop (clearance sale). Similar styles here, here and here.  Shades: Ray Ban (Got them here).

Change is good. Denim and slouchy tops are fine but I was feeling a bit lady like. Did it before with skimmers (in this post). This time I fancied Queen Mum block heels.   That's the first thing I think of when I spot shoes like this: the royal family. Feels more mod with a short dress.

I've lived in winged eye liner this week - this is my fave pencil - definitely try it.  Topshop has picked up on the retro vibe too I noticed.  Come Autumn I want to wear this coat over plain woollies and knit tights.  Plus the pointy flats or these outdoor slippers with skinnies and a slim cut long blazer.  Even loafers  are perfect.

This is about as 'done' as I like hair. The messier - the better (I took the hair pins out right after these pics were taken).

All this retro talk makes me think of one queen of the whole damn look I'm talking about - Amy Winehouse.  She had an effing brilliant retro style that I always loved.  100% mod inspiration.

May she rest in peace.

before 100

JBrand kiki flares in Pure (found them here as well).  Jacket: Vintage. Crochet top: Thrift. Boots: Forever 21 (better pic of them in this post).  Shades: Ray Ban.  Ring: Mania Mania.  Hat: ASOS. Snake print bag: Rebecca Minkoff (worn with a tea dress here).

Before the heat wave hit and New York wasn't a sweat box, I wore my favourite things: denim flares.  I like how slim cut these ones are, only kicking out from knee down.  Plus they are stretchy - bonus.

You  know the jacket by now (seen in this post with leopard heels).

These are the little things I really miss wearing because it's so hot right now: denim flares, a fedora, a jacket.

footsies

Before

After

and I couldn't resist

All Saints bonny boots (on sale in suede). Jeffrey Campbell platform brogues.

I updated my All Saints with metal tips. Been thinking about doing it since last year and I pulled the trigger this week.  Another Shop Love post is coming up on where I had them done!

As for the last pair - I couldn't resist.  That's what happens when I walk into LF (in between snapping street style pictures) and I try them on 'just to see.'  Well - I loved them.  Who knows, they may sit in my wardrobe for ages unused but I have a spinning roladex of outfits in my head already so expect blog appearances very soon!

ps. I wore them right out the shop with this white dress

the widow

Dress: Spanish Moss American Gold.  Winkelpickers: Underground @ ASOS.  Bag: Foley & Corinna vintage.  Gold mirror shades: Ray Ban. Cross: LF. Nails: Topshop.

I wore this dress for the William Rast party at the Dream Hotel last weekend.  We took these pictures early evening just before walking into the hotel. I knew I'd be snapping loads of pics of everyone else, so Michael quickly took these before handing me the camera to take over (I'm really getting into shooting other people).

I almost never wear all black in the height of summer but I make an allowance with this one (seen before here with more boots - sandals next - for SURE).

Pics from the party to follow.

ps. Is it just New York that's going through a heat wave this week? I mean - 95/100. WTF?
